Former Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez among others have been sanctioned by the U.S Treasury for drug trafficking ties.
The U.S Treasury Department made this known on Wednesday that it has sanctioned Former Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez and more than 20 others, including popular singer Julion Alvarez, for links with a drug cartel and kingpin. Rafael Marquez is being accused of having financial ties with a suspected drug kingpin Raul Flores Hernandez along with links to a certain Sinaloa cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Gang.

This comes after the U.S President Donald Trump promised to destroy the Mexico’s drug cartels.
Following the publication, Marquez’s visa has been canceled and would not be able to come into the U.S, and all his assets frozen pending when all will be cleared off.

Rafael Marquez signed for Barcelona in 2003 and won 2 Champions Leagues with the club. While the footballer remained silent, singer Julion Alvarez, defended himself and the footballer saying:
“He’s got one of the longest careers in football, do you really think he would need to do something like this?”
