University of Nigeria Medical Student Association just awarded a ten thousand naira cash gift to the best graduating student of the year and Nigerians are angry mostly because it is being thought that the prize was awarded by GT Bank.
The price, which was given to the best graduating student at the school Induction/Swearing In ceremony of Medical Student, was reflected in a banner Cheque design with a GTB logo on it and this sparked the assumption that the award from GTB whereas this only shows that the Medical Association Banks with GTB.
Nigerians took to social media to react to the prize saying the prize is not enough for the effort put in by a student who graduated as the best student. Many noted that cash gifts as little as ten thousand naira would not motivate students to study. Some Nigerians on social media compared the prize given to the student to what is given to people who compete in beauty pageants and Big Brother Africa.
A Twitter user Director Solomon said: “Best graduating medical student of UNN cash prize 10k, BBN cash prize 25,000,000. How do you tell the youths education is the key?”
Another Facebook user Jaafar said: “Congrats! Best Graduating student of college of medicine, UNN awarded N10,000 ($30). But it seems the cheque banner itself is worth more than the reward. Recession is real o!”
It is not uncommon to present banner cheque with name of the banker on it. This does not in anyway show that the Bank itself is awarding the sum. Here are some examples of Cheque banners that do not translate to the Bank award the money.
This one is from Glo to Nigerian Professional Football League but it has a Sterling Bank logo because Glo has a Sterling Bank Account not because Sterling Bank is awarding it:
This one is from Nigerian Youths Professional Forum to Santa Paulo and it has an Heritage Bank logo on it because it is an Heritage Bank Cheque issued by the body:
Here is Pipul TV with a GTB cheque for Nationwide League One, because they have a GTB account:
Now this is what you would have seen if it was from GTB. Here is a Skye Bank effort presenting a Skye Bank cheque:
