Police arrests suspect over Anambra Church shootings

The Anambra State Police Command has said that suspects have been arrested for involvement in the shootings at St. Phillips Catholic Church on Sunday.

Spokesman for the Command, Nkeiruka Nwode, said the arrests were made on Monday. The spokesman also added that due to the sensitivity of the investigations, the identities of the arrested suspect would not be revealed and the public would be better informed after the completion of investigations.

You would recall that unidentified gunmen stormed the church premises in the early hours of Sunday. The gunmen were said to have shot and killed a man, identified as Pa. Ikegwuonu, at close range  before shooting sporadically at the congregation. It was also gathered that the gunmen were in search of his son, Aloysius, who was meant to have arrived the village on Saturday but had left earlier.

Governor Willie Obiano who  described the incident as worrisome also said that ongoing investigation by the police has indicated that it is an issue between two persons from the community residing abroad. The Governor’s quick verdict helped curbed the dangerous rumour that it was a terrorist attack in which case Fulani Herdsmen would have been blamed. As soon as it became clear that the herdsmen were not responsible, the tag of “terror” was removed from this obvious terrorist bloodbath.

The Governor also commended the Doctors for their quick response and pledged the support of the State in the offset of the bills of those being treated. The state will also fund the funeral of those who lost their lives.
