Morocco overtakes Kenya to host CHAN 2018

Morocco has overtaken Kenya to host the 2018 African Championship (CHAN) which was previously won, for lack of proper preparation.

Confederation of African Football (CAF), withdrew the hosting rights from Kenya after a unanimous decision was reached to transfer the hosting rights to Morocco at an emergency meeting in Lagos, Nigeria.

CAF said that Kenya will not be able to meet up with the infrastructural standard before the commencement of the competition in January 2018 despite the SH 4.2 billion recently approved by the Government.

The revocation came following CAF’s inspections on available infrastructure, delay of projects amongst others in a visit by CAF officials which kicked off in September 11 through 17, 2017.

“The deadline for receipt of applications is seven days from Sunday, September 24. The identity of the bidding countries will be disclosed within a maximum of 15 days after the opening of the bidding process.” CAF had said while opening a bid for the rights to host.

Morocco, South Africa and Equatorial Guinea were Nations bidding for the hosting rights. South Africa had later withdrawn, leaving Morocco and Equatorial Guinea but Equatorial Guinea had failed to provide a letter of guarantee from her Government which was a vital document and thus were not considered.

Egypt benefitted the most from the outcome as they gain a place to return to the competition after been eliminated by Morocco who automatically gets qualification as hosts of the tournament.

This comes as the first time Morocco will host a Senior Continental Competition since 1988 when they hosted the African Cups of Nations after stepping down to host the 2015 edition due to wide spread Ebola virus concerns.
