Close to two months after he returned to the country from his medical trip to London, United Kingdom, President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to commence use of his office following reports of a rat infestation of the office.
The President, who touched down in the country on August 19 amidst mixed feelings of happiness and indifference, is reported to have been carrying out his duties from an office inside his official residence and another one located inside the Presidential Banquet Hall.
Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, had reported that the President’s office required renovation because it had been devastated by rodents in the long period of disuse. He said that the rodents had caused damage to the furniture and the air conditioning units. Also, although he did not say for certain when the renovation would be completed, the Presidential spokesman said that the maintenance company had been mandated to speed up the pace of its work.
It has been 56 days since the President returned to the country and he is yet to resume work in the office. However, his residence and the Presidential Banquet Hall, where he operates from, are less than five minutes’ walk from his office, and the President is reported to have been hosting meetings and other events in the two venues.
Mr. Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, said that the places from where the President was operating were also offices. According to him, the most important thing is that the President is working.
